A silicon aluminium bronze alloy, with 6% aluminium and 2% silicon plus a small addition of iron for strength. The alloy has medium strength compared with AB1 and AB2 but has superior machinability. It meets the requirements of BS1400 AB3 CuAl6Si2Fe and has excellent corrosion resistance in sea water and holds its own in other corrosive environments. AB3 has low magnetic permeability, making it suitable for specialist military applications. AB3 is widely used for medium to heavy loads under slow moving conditions but needs adequate lubrication.

Key Features

A ductile aluminium bronze with excellent corrosion resistance; particularly good under crevice corrosion conditions.

Suitable for moderate strength applications running a low speeds with adequate lubrication.

Typical Uses

The alloy has low magnetic permeability properties compared with the nickel aluminium bronzes.
